Crystal Kurek has recently played the role of Cinderella twice, back to back — once in Sondheim’s Into the Woods (October 2022) and then (December 2022) the title role in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. In March 2023 she put on her non-musical acting hat to give a tour de force dramatic performance in the lead role of Bella in Angel Street, upon which the movie Gaslight was based. She returned to the title role in Dear Miss Barrett in 2024, and is playing the lead role of Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls in Nov. 2024. In early 2025 she will be in the musical Chicago (details to come).
She has been active in the theater since childhood. Other recent roles have included the lead roles of Marian Paroo (“the librarian”) in The Music Man (snagging her second regional Broadway World “Best Performer in a Musical Award for 2021), Elizabeth Barrett in Dear Miss Barrett, Lily in The Secret Garden, Rosalind in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Miss Honey in Matilda, Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, twice in the title role in Mary Poppins, Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Maria in West Side Story (for which she won the Regional Broadway World Award for “Best Actress in a Musical” for 2015), Fantine in Les Miserables, Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, Tuptim in The King and I, Meg in Little Women, and several others.
As a child actor, she appeared on stage with Shirley Jones, Jodi Benson, The Osmonds, Phyllis Diller, Barry Williams, and others. As a model with the Ford Modeling Agency in New York and member of the Screen Actors Guild, she appeared in print ads for Gitano, JC Penney, Coca-Cola and others, and in TV commercials and shows including Live with Regis and Kathy Lee and The Today Show. Years of all forms of dance and singing lessons led her to major in music and then earn her master’s degree in education at Vanderbilt University. She teaches music and theater at St. Edward School in Nashville and lives with her husband, internationally acclaimed Composer Laureate of Tennessee, Michael Kurek , and two lovely cats. Her motto:
